Xbox Gamertag FAQ
How can I change my Xbox Gamertag?
If you’re not happy with your current Gamertag, there are several options for changing it. First, you can simply log into your account on xbox.com and click on your profile in the top-right corner, then on the three dots to the right and choose ‘Xbox settings.’ From there, you’ll be able to switch to a new valid name. Alternatively, you can change it on an Xbox console by hitting the Guide button, going to your profile, and selecting ‘Choose your new Gamertag’ from the menu. Once again, this will take you to a screen where you’ll be able to swap to a new online name.
Can I change my Xbox Gamertag for free?
Changing your Gamertag is free the very first time you change it on your account. After that, further changes will cost $9.99, so it pays to think carefully about your Gamertag — try to pick something that will age well, and something that doesn’t give away any personal information about yourself.
What is an Xbox Gamertag?
Your Xbox Gamertag is your online handle used on any supported platform on the Xbox Network — Xbox consoles, as well as select Windows 10 and mobile games. Your Gamertag tracks games you play, play time for each game, achievements you unlock, and more. A Gamertag can be used to sign in and play on any and all supported devices, so you only need one, no matter how many of those supported systems you want to play on.
How can I find an available Xbox Gamertag?
Simply type the name you’d like to look up in the box on the Xbox Gamertag Checker. The search result will tell you if it is already in use or if it is available, and will also flag up Gamertags that may be deemed unsuitable by Microsoft (one that uses offensive language, for instance). Once you’ve found a name that you like and that is available, head over to xbox.com to set yourself up with a fresh Microsoft account and claim it, or log into an existing account if you’re looking to change your Gamertag.
What is a valid Xbox Gamertag?
In order for a Gamertag to be valid, it must be at least three characters long but no more than 12 characters long. They also cannot contain special characters, and must start with a letter. Consecutive spaces are also prohibited. In addition, words and terms deemed offensive may not be allowed — your Gamertag is publicly visible, so you should try to avoid anything that could cause offense to others anyway.
